Lake-Barrine Gulf Savannah Tour - ATherton Tablelands

Explore the Savannah Plains of Outback Queensland west of Cairns out to Cobbold Gorge. Travelling in a group of no more than 12, enjoy a fully personalised experience.

Gain insight into the days where dinosaurs were roaming. In these times the area was an ocean filled with coral until a catastrophic explosion changed the landscape into what is now known as the Savannah Plains.

On this journey you will have the opportunity to interact with native flora & fauna and natural geological wonders.

Begin the journey

Begin the journey into the Outback Savannah stopping at the Lake Barrine Tea House for some famous scones. Lake Barrine is a beautiful clear water lake formed by a volcanic crater, rimmed with emerald green rainforest. Making your way through the luscious Atherton Tablelands the next destination is Ravenshoe, Queensland’s highest town. The small rural town is an attraction for those wanting to escape the heat and humidity of the coast. Nearby the Millstream Falls plunge over the edge of a columnar basalt lava flow creating the widest single-drop waterfall in Australia. Take the walking track through dry woodland, mostly dominated by eucalypts, as it sits in the rain shadow of the Great Dividing Range, to arrive at the viewing platform over the falls.

Cobbold Gorge 1

Cobbold Gorge

The next 2 nights of the adventure will be spent at Cobbold Gorge Village where guests can enjoy the swimming pool, hiking trails and other recreations. On the way we will stop at Einasleigh Hotel for lunch across the road from the Copperfield Gorge. And enjoy a cold drink at the newly refurbished pub in Forsayth before continuing the journey. You will spend the night star gazing around the campfire sharing stories with other travelers. Guests will participate in a range of activities to enjoy all that Cobbold Gorge has to offer.

Take a relaxing float along the gorge on the silent boat tour, taking in the majestic sheer cliffs and walls, and searching for freshwater crocodiles. The guide will pass on knowledge of the local indigenous tribes, past colonists and stories about the Robinhood Cattle Station. Additional activities include a helicopter flight over the cattle station, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding on the lake.

On the way home

Explore points of interest on the way back through the luscious Atherton Tablelands. Guests will also have the chance to stop in at the Innot Hot Springs. The hot springs are natural mineral water springs that flow into the creek, reaching up to 75°C in some sections; the water is said to have healing properties. Another attraction, The Crater, is a volcanic pipe that has a diameter of 61 metres at water level. From the viewing platform guests can take in the enormity of the natural wonder. Guests will also visit Herberton’s Historic Village where there are more than 50 restored period buildings making this the largest outdoor museum in Queensland. Guests will then head back down the Kuranda Range to Cairns to finish the 4 Day Outback Explorer Tour of the Gulf Savannah.
